In 1905, some celebrities and gentry merged and raised funds. On the basis of turning Wuxi City Center into several small private gardens, Wuxi people established their first wooden outdoor park. The park has gone through three dynasties and 100 years since its inception. It has always adhered to a principle: no admission tickets, nor does it target anyone. Shortly after the establishment of the “Wooden Outdoor Park in the City”, Wuxi citizens followed their habits to give it another nickname: “Public Garden”.
The wooden outdoor park is recognized by the garden community as the first wooden outdoor park in the West and the first public garden in the true sense.
